Koon Brother is a Malaysian company that has been around since 1948 making biscuits and other (generally sweet) packaged snacks. You know how much I love trying new snacks! I was drawn to their "Snazk Bites" product line, which includes bite sized biscuits (called "Golden Cubes"). These are not something I'd normally be excited for ... except for the fact that they make a salted egg version. Oh yes! Malaysian snacks are always such fun flavors for me. The brand also seems to make a spicy salted egg version of the Golden Cubes, and a series of spreads (salted egg, cookie butter, and hazelnut). I was only able to find and try the basic salted egg Golden Cubes.

Salted Egg Golden Cube. |
"Delicious salted egg biscuit snack."
"Snazk Bites Salted Egg Golden Cube is a delicious salted egg biscuit snack. Fresh salted egg yolks cured to the hue of golden sunlight with the combination of crispy crisp. Then baked it into a lovely little cube form with a salted egg topping."
Ok, wow, these are so strange! I’m fairly familiar with salted egg yolk products at this point, although they are not something I was exposed to until the past 10 or so years. I definitely seek out salted egg snacks (like all those from The Golden Duck and the incredible salted egg popcorn from PopSmile) and order salted egg dishes on menus whenever I see them as I love the complexity of the flavor), but these surprised even me. I realize in retrospect I’m not entirely sure what I was expecting, but I don’t think it was these. In particular, I was expecting something more cube-shaped given the name "Golden Cube", and more chip-like given the image on the packaging (although I know know that the parent company specializes is biscuits, not chips, so, this tracks).
Instead, the pieces are basically (large) bite size wafer cookies. They are considerably shorter than a normal wafer cookie, and have only one layer of filling (unlike most wafer cookies that have several alternating layers), but they are wafer cookies (or, biscuits depending on your flavour of English). They have that melt in your mouth exterior wafer texture, and creamy filling like any other flavor of wafer cookie. But these are definitely not like any other flavor of wafer cookie in taste!
They are savory. They are slightly sweet. They are lightly salty. They are rich. Yet they are light. So many things going on here. I was fascinated, drawn in, and consumed a fair number before the richness and strong flavors got overwhelming (the bag says 10 servings ... which I finished in one evening after taking a short break midway. They were that addicting!). There were a few little bits of curry leaves in the bag too, but they didn't seem to add much flavor.
I found these quite snackable - good form factor in terms of size and texture, just a nice eating experience. Complex flavor. Yup, a great snack, although you definitely need to be in the mood for this kind of thing. ****.
(By the way, the ingredients list for these is far from wholesome, besides the expected salted egg yolk and flour, there is palm kernel fat, shortening, sugar, maltodextrin, whey powder, vegetable oil, palm oil, etc, etc.)
